Poetry Discussion

Poetry Discussion

“Poetry is the revelation of a feeling that the poet believes to be interior and personal but which the reader recognizes as his own. Salvatore QuasimodoIn many of the poems that we have read this week, the writers use imagery, sound,  crisp language and observations to express emotional truths. Poetry, like song, depends on music and rhythm to achieve effect. It also depends on clarity of image and expression. The purpose of poetry is to allow the reader to feel and understand the emotion expressed by the poet. Poetry is a vehicle for intense and intimate expression, and as such, it can be either tightly or loosely structured.  WRITE THREE POEMSThis week you will write three poems:

one, a structured sonnet, which uses a poetic form
a free verse poem
a poetic form of your choice

SonnetWrite a sonnet (see attached file for examples of sonnets and Power Point presentation and video below). A sonnet is 14 lines in length and uses the following rhyme scheme:

ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
There are three quatrains, and one final couplet, for a total of four stanzas.

The most famous writer of sonnets in the English language is  Shakespeare.

What is notable about his sonnets is how they create a logical thought about a certain topic.
Each sonnet has a problem, and each quatrain develops that problem.

The final couplet comes to a conclusion based on the supposition that has developed above.  Lets take a look at one of Shakespeares most famous sonnets (Shall I compare thee to a summer day):
