Extra Credit
Pick a topic you think is interesting or want to learn more about. It can be almost anything; neural networks, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), music, harmonics, basketball, medicine, muscle tissue structure, carbon nanotubes, artificial intelligence, rock climbing – it can art inspired, engineering inspired, biology inspired, genetics inspired, materials inspired, nature/space inspired – pick something that you are into.
Find a relatively short video on your topic (short meaning shoot for < 20 mins). Pick an interesting video that you like and are inspired by. (If you absolutely love a video that is slightly longer that 20 minutes thats fine). Find two references: the first one - reputable but doesnt have to be a scientific article or journal. The second reference needs to be a scientific article/paper. It is okay if you only use a small portion of the article or paper in your write up. Use these references to help you write your review and answer the assigned questions. Let me know when you use a reference by putting a (1) or (2) after the sentence/paragraph where you used it (be sure to include a URL for the video and reference materials). Answer the assigned questions in number or bullet point format. No need to write an essay. Required Questions: (1) Name your topic. (2) How does your object/topic work? Name some underlying math, physics, or science. This will be the bulk of your write-up/grade, spend some time here. If you can relate your topic to math - show me in some questions and explain how they work. For example, if the pick basketball, you could talk about the mechanics of a perfect shot. If you talk about genetics, you can explain how DNA works. Show me pictures, diagrams and/or equations. You do not have to fully understand how your topic works, especially if it is very complex, but go into some detail. (3) Have you come across your topic in the past? Do you want it to be part of your future research or possible career? (4) Do you have a mentor on this topic? Or someone who you look up to who understands your topic well? Who is this person for you? If you dont have one, where could you find one? (5) Explain to me why you chose this topic. Why is it interesting or inspiring to you? Submissions: This assignment must be submitted to Blackboard as a PDF under the Extra Credit Assignment by Monday, December 2nd at 11:59pm. You must include links to both your video and supporting articles on your write-up and answer all the questions. Your score will depend on the quality of your resources and answers.
