Heat Transfer-Abtahi Session-Spring 2021
Fin Experiment-Due Sunday March 21-2021
Conducted by:—————————————————
Data Provided by:———————————————
Introduction
Explain and discuss how the fin experiment helps discuss conduction versus convection. The significance of the Biot number. Show the fundamental equation of heat diffusion in a fin with constant cross-sectional area.
Theoretical Solution
Discuss the different solutions for fins depending on assumed boundary conditions. Discuss your understanding of the h the heat transfer coefficient. How it is related to a dimensionless number: Nu Nusselt Number, and how Nu is a function of Re and Pr.
Experimental Results
While the experiment that was conducted lacked consistent environmental conditions, with changing temperatures and wind velocity, it did provide enough data to plot a fin temperature profile and with appropriate assumptions allow a comparison with a theoretical solution.
Numerical Analysis
We shall use the same theoretical analysis to develop a finite difference solution for the fins used in the experiment.
Conclusions and Fundamentals of Engineering Research
While this experiment may have lacked in accuracy, it can be used as an example of how even rudimentary experiments can be used to verify theoretical solutions. This is a section where you must spend some time on and discuss.
