EB3803/BI3001 – Assignment 2 – Individual Report

EB3803/BI3001 – Assignment 2 – Individual Report

Executive brief
Blackpool is one of the largest and most popular resorts in the UK. It’s famous as a traditional British seaside destination, particularly known for the golden sands, promenade and world-class attractions such as Blackpool Tower and The Blackpool Pleasure Beach, featuring some of the UK’s fastest and tallest rollercoasters.
Blackpool attracts 18.2m visitors per year, but, crucially, only around 100,000 are international visitors. VisitBlackpool (https://www.visitblackpool.com) is the company responsible for promoting this destination and they are keen to make Blackpool a destination of choice for international tourists.
To help, they have invited students of B.A. International Business Communication and B.A. Language for International Business to write a report for Marketing Manager Nicola Atanassova on how to raise the profile of Blackpool to international visitors as a destination: either as part of their UK itinerary or as a stand-alone destination. Ultimately, Nicola wants you to create a strategy which raises the profile of Blackpool as a destination of choice for international visitors to the UK.
Nicola is looking for recommendations and research on:
• What international visitors are looking for when visiting a UK destination
• Which international markets segments to target
• How to target and enter these markets
• Possible partners and strategic international alliances and advice on building relationships with international partners
• A CSR strategy/ sustainable policies which would help attract international visitors
• Suggestions on how to make VisitBlackpool’s corporate culture and structure more internationally focussed
• how to control VisitBlackpool’s international operations

Background to Blackpool
Blackpool is a large town and seaside resort on the Lancashire coast in England. The town is on the Irish Sea, 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Preston and one hour drive time from key cities such as Manchester and Liverpool and their respective international airports.
Visitors started coming to Blackpoll in the late 18th Century attracted to Blackpool’s 7-mile (11 km) sandy beach. Stagecoaches began running to Blackpool from Manchester and by the 1840s Blackpool rose to prominence as a major centre of tourism in England after a railway had been built connecting it to the industrialised regions of Northern England.
Shifts in tastes, combined with opportunities for Britons to travel overseas, affected Blackpool’s status as a leading resort in the late 20th century but the resort continues to attract millions of visitors every year.
Blackpool’s major attractions and landmarks include Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Illuminations, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Zoo, Sandcastle Waterpark, the Winter Gardens, and the UK’s only surviving first-generation tramway.
