Conflict Modes

Your written response to this discussion prompt assesses your ability to (a) summarize effective methods to communicate with all stakeholders, considering their individual interests, priorities and cultural differences for programming of students with disabilities, (b) clarify the potential challenges in the process of collaboration in the public school setting, and (c) critique proactive methods for interactive and effective communication with those of differing perspectives.

When working within a group, especially with differing perspectives, conflict is a common occurrence. In order to understand your teammates, and collaborate and communicate effectively, it is useful to understand your own conflict management style. To prepare for this discussion post, watch the following CPP, Inc. (2014) video (Links to an external site.) and read the short Meier (2011) article (Links to an external site.) , describing the types of conflict management styles. Then, take the short quiz to identify your own style.

Initial Post: Include the following elements in your post:

· Identify your conflict management style and describe what it means in your own words.

· Do you agree with the outcome? Why or why not? If not, which category do you feel is more akin to your management style?

· Identify three strengths and three weaknesses for your identified style.

· How will this knowledge help serve you in your work in the special education profession?

Guided Response: Respond to a peer that identified the same conflict management style as your own and contrast your list of strengths and weaknesses. Then, respond to a second peer that identified a different conflict management style than your own. Discuss how you think the two styles could work together. What would be potential strengths and weaknesses in your relationship?

Though two replies are the basic expectation, for deeper engagement and application of the material, you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have given to you (including your instructor) before Day 7. Be sure to ask questions of your peers to gain additional information and to meaningfully continue the discussion. This ongoing engagement in the discussion will deepen the conversation, while also providing opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with this topic.
