Cultural Geography Peru

Cultural Geography Peru

As indicated on the syllabus, this course is intended to develop your knowledge and abilities related to four broad core learning outcomes (CLOs), which are:

1. Describe and evaluate the characteristics, distribution, and complexity of Earth’s cultural regions.

2. Define and evaluate the concepts of diversity and globalization and analyze their dynamic tension.

3. Identify, locate, and describe the physical and human characteristics of places.

4. Explain and analyze how physical systems affect human systems, and vice versa.

DIRECTIONS

Your task, therefore, is to create a PowerPoint presentation document that includes at least 3 content slides that illustrate your learning regarding EACH of the four CLOs. In other words, you must include at least 3 content slides that demonstrate what you have learned about the place regarding CLO #1, and then at least 3 for CLO #2, etc. Thus, you should have a total of at least 12 different content slides.

Keep in mind that during the course of the semester you completed assignments that required you to compile specific information about certain aspects of the cultural geography of the place. In addition to having you explore particular concepts being discussed during that part of the course, those assignments were actually intended to have you develop slides that would contain information that would be well suited for use in this portfolio assignment.

So, in general, you should simply have to select those slides from your assignments that you think best illustrate one of the four CLOs and create a new PowerPoint document that contains those slides. In some cases these slides may be good to use “as is” (with the exception of needing to add a statement about which CLO it addresses–see below). In other cases, you may need to combine content from two or more slides or add some additional information. However, you are welcome to create entirely new slides if you would like to find additional information about your place that you think would better illustrate one or more of the CLOs.

On each content slide, you must include the following:

1. Clearly state which CLO the content of the slide demonstrates and briefly explain how it does so.

2. Clearly state and discuss in your own words specific/detailed information (e.g., “facts and figures”) regarding the content topic as it pertains to your place of study.

3. Provide at least one image (i.e., map, picture, graph, etc.) that illustrates this particular aspect of the cultural geography of the place. NOTE: You should clearly explain how this image is helping to illustrate the CLO as part of your discussion on the slide.

As a minimum standard, each content slide must contain a total of at least 100 words of information, discussion, etc., and you must utilize a citation method (e.g., parenthetical) to properly document the source(s) of the information provided. Any comments, statements, or sentences that you directly borrow (i.e., copy and paste) from another source MUST be put in quotation marks and properly cited. Otherwise, you are committing plagiarism, which is a particular form of academic dishonesty, and your score will be subject to the appropriate academic penalties, as stated on the course syllabus.

In addition, your presentation document must include an introductory title slide that includes your name, the toponym of the place, and at least one image that you think best illustrates the place. You are encouraged to decorate the slide as much as possible to reflect the overall culture of the place.

After your 12+ content slides, you must conclude your portfolio with a slide on which you provide a self-reflective “learning essay” in which you summarize and evaluate what you personally have learned about the cultural geography of the place that you have studied for this project. Ideally, this should follow the format of an “I-Search” paper, in which you briefly discuss what you already knew about the topic at the beginning of the course, what you wanted to learn, and then how you went about learning it. In the process of your learning essay, you should discuss at least three (3) specific examples of what you personally found most interesting regarding what you learned about the cultural geography of this place. These examples may be from the material in the content slides that you included in the portfolio slides, or they may be from additional information that found during the semester but have not previously shared in any assignments. In total, your discussion on this slide must be at least 250 words in length. (NOTE: Please use the smallest size of font necessary to fit your entire learning essay on one slide. Over 250 words can easily be fit onto one slide using 18-20 point size fonts, so you are welcome to use 12-14 point fonts (or even smaller, if necessary) in order to keep your learning essay on one slide.)

Finally, you must include a final works cited slide. Remember that you are expected to provide full and proper bibliographic citations for each source included in your works cited. You may use any common academic citation method you would like (e.g., APA, MLA, etc.), but you must choose one and use it consistently for this project. Please note, simply providing the URL (i.e., website address) for an internet source is NOT a full and proper bibliographic citation. You will not receive full credit for your works cited slide if you do not provide full and proper bibliographic citations for each source.

While you are welcome to use whatever sources of material you may find, everyone should have already utilized the CIA World Factbook (especially for current facts and figures). However, you should use other resources to supplement and provide further detail. For our purposes, you are also welcome to include our course textbook as a source (as appropriate). In total, you should utilize at least 4 different sources for the project as a whole.

As stated on the course syllabus, you will be expected to make an informal presentation of your place portfolio in class during our scheduled final exam period during finals week. Part of your grade for this project will include credit for whether or not you are present for this period and tell the class about some of the highlights of your place portfolio.
