Lesson 2 Assignment Name ___________________________

Math and Physical Properties CHM107 – Section number __________

Lesson 2

This assignment is worth 100 points. Your instructor will provide the values for the variables in some of the questions below. Please show all work for credit.

1. Calculate the density of each of the substances described below: (3 points each, 9 points total)

a. a salt water solution with a volume of 25 mL and a mass of 26.2 g:

b. a block of wood with a mass of 35.5 g and a volume of 15.6 mL:

c. a container filled with gas. The mass of the gas is 7.65 g and the volume is 12.5 mL.

2. Find the indicated quantities below: (3 points each, 6 points total)

a. What is the mass of the liquid propylene glycol, a moisturizing agent for foods, which has a density of 1.036 g/mL at 25oC and a volume of 2.03 mL?

b. What is the volume of a piece of gold that has a mass of 56.5 g? The density of gold is19.32 g/cm3.

3. Temperature-dependent scientific data are often recorded in degrees C (° C). Convert the temperature readings as directed below (3 pts each, 6 pts total)

a. What is the temperature in Kelvin if the temperature recorded is 58.0 ° C?

b. What is the Celsius temperature if the temperature recorded is 305.0 K?

4. A glass container has a mass of 12.5 g. An unknown liquid solution with a volume of 10.0 mL is added to the container. The unknown liquid solution plus the container has a mass of 24.5 g . Calculate the density of the unknown solution, showing all work (8 pts).

5. Convert the following into scientific notation: (4 points each, 12 points total)

a. 8720 grams

b. 0.0000052 liters

c. 720,000,000 meters

6. A metal object that has a mass of 5.2 g and a density of 2.50 g/mL was placed in a graduated cylinder filled with water that has an initial volume of 18.2 mL. What is the new water level on the graduated cylinder after the object was placed in the cylinder? (Hint: Find the volume of the metal first; the new volume of water in the cylinder will be equal to the metal’s volume plus the initial volume of the water in the cylinder). (6 points)

7. What are the units of temperature? What are the units of heat? (6 pts)

8. Determine if each of the following is an example of heat or temperature: (3 pts each, 12 pts total)

a. it is 90 degrees F outside

b. the heater is set to “high”

c. the ice cube feels cold when I hold it in my hand

d. the pizza is hot when it comes out of the oven.

9. A sample of the metallic element sodium is studied in the laboratory, and a series of observations is recorded. Its mass is 29.1 grams and its volume is 30.0 cubic centimeters. It melts at 98oC. A freshly cut surface of the metal is shiny gray. Electric current can be passed through the sample. The sample can be easily flattened by hitting gently with a hammer. When placed in water, sodium reacts vigorously to produce a gas that burns easily. When heated in the presence of chlorine gas, a white granular solid forms. A freshly cut surface of sodium reacts slowly with oxygen from the air to produce a white powder.

a. List the chemical properties of sodium that can be derived from the statements above. (10 points)

b. What is the density of sodium metal based on the information from the above statement? Be sure to show your calculation. (10 points)

10. A piece of metal will feel hotter than a piece of wood at the same temperature. Using the concepts learned in this unit, explain why this is so. Be detailed in your answer and use terms from this lesson. (15 points)
