Informative Speech Presentations
Maximum time: 10 min.
Informative speeches are simply to inform people! Don’t choose a topic based
on your opinion (that’s a persuasive speech)—look for subjects that interest you
or that you have personal experience with and will ALSO be interesting to the
audience.
Topic approval is done only by Prof. E — on a first come, first served basis.
There will be no repeats (see provided Link in Announcement to sign up and reserve your
topic)
Everyone must have their topics entered NO LATER THAN DUE DATE ON SYLLABUS (or
you will lose points)
Speech outlines are to be a guide, to help you organize your speech, but it’s not
set in stone. I would suggest you use slides to guide your presentation.
Do NOT write your speech out word-for-word! As you give your speech, be
aware that too much ad-libbing will cause you to lose focus, lose your place and
likely your audience, so stick to your plan. You don’t want to sound “robotic”.
Informative Speech Guidelines
Deciding on your topic
?Choose your topic from the list provided. You can see that the list is long and
varied—choose something that interests you AND will interest your audience!
We want to listen to topics that are truly informative—so choose wisely.
?Think interesting and/or unusual. Can your subject be broken into 2 -4
subtopics for organization?
?You also need to be sure there are adequate supporting information/research
details out there to talk for 10 minutes. (Your references will be included on
your outline.) Can you cover your topic in 10 minutes? Going over will lose points. Stay on
target!
?Develop a “thesis statement”—one short sentence that will “grab” your
audience. It should be fun and engaging.
Researching your topic
?Use a variety of references. You will need to include these on your speech
outline (but you do not have to tell us the references in your speech itself).
Writing your speech
?Consider your audience—assume that they know little about your subject but
don’t talk to them like they are clueless.
?Outline your speech—order your key points. This can be done
chronologically or in order of importance. Make sure your information flows—
in a sequence that makes sense to both you and the audience.
?Expand your outline—adding details to make your key points interesting and
informative.
?Write an introduction that will grab the audience’s attention. Mention your
main points and let the audience know the direction you will be taking.
?Write a conclusion that quickly summarizes your key points. Basically you
return to the theme from your intro and then end with a strong, memorable
statement.
?List your references at the bottom of your outline.
Practicing your speech
?Practice your speech out loud and time yourself. Add or cut material as
needed.
?Practice slowing down! Generally, when you are nervous, you speed up and it
will make it difficult to understand you. Practice slowing down even more
than what feels natural. Learn to insert pauses into your speech.
?Practice your speech with “props” (or transitions within your slides) if you will be using
them. When live, keep in mind… Props can fail and technology can malfunction.
?Practice speaking clearly and comprehensively.
