Elements of Medical Terms

Learning medical terminology is more than memorization. The process of learning complex medical terms consists of focusing on the word elements such as prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. Understanding these elements will assist you in learning hundreds of medical terms.

After reading Chapter 1, you are to post a response for this discussion that entails differentiating the word elements and identifying the term’s origin. There are two parts to this discussion.

Part 1: Choose 2 of the terms in column A and differentiate the prefix, suffix, combining form, and word root.

Part 2: In addition, use one medical term of your choice to create an educational piece as if you were talking to a patient to describe what the word means in layman’s terms.

As an example for Part 1, use the following format to identify the word elements for the terms chosen:

Example: Anteroposterior

Anter – word root

Poster – word root

Anter/o – combining form

Poster/o – combining form

ior – suffix

Guided Response: Respond to two classmates. You need to choose one of the diseases; conditions or tests described in your classmate’s main post and give more information related to disease, condition, or test that was not covered by the classmate in their main response. Your response should be at least 75 words. List your references in APA format and use citations where applicable.
