Presentation Topic:
The presentation should examine the level of institutionalization in Suriname, as well
as the causes and consequences of that institutionalization (or the lack of it).
Presentation Requirement:
Presentation should be no longer than 8 minutes (timing is one of the assessed
criteria) and be presented on a Powerpoint.
Content
Follow the already tried and tested formula: namely, tell your audience what you are
going to say, say it and then summarise the main points.
Develop your argument logically: do not jump about from one topic to another. It may
not be an essay, but you still have to present a coherent case to the audience or they
will lose the thread of your argument.
Use examples to illustrate a point.
Make sure you are answering the question you have been set.
Finish with conviction: sum up with a decisive concluding statement, so everyone
knows you have finished and comes away with your main point fresh in their minds.
Avoid coming to an abrupt stop in mid-sentence or drifting to an end by tailing off as
you run out of time.
Visual aids
Use a clear, bold font so that it is large enough to be seen at a distance. Arial or
Constantia are good fonts for Powerpoint presentations. Try to avoid using smaller
than 28pt. Black text on white background is difficult for dyslexic people to read.
On the whole, less is more – do not try to put too much information onto a slide – if in
doubt put it over two slides.
Make sure the visual material is relevant and avoid low quality images that will not
work on a presentation.
