Math 117: Statistics Dr. Schwendner

Version 1.a

End of term project

Due: 4/21, 5pm

2

Purpose: This project is to be culmination of a term’s work. It will incorporate material you have learned: designing an experiment, exploratory data analysis and regression and hypothesis testing. In addition, it will require learning some technological skills and practicing your presentation abilities.

Your project: This is a single-person project. You are responsible to perform and analyze the data. Each student will have a different project.

Research Details: 1) The first task is to decide on an INTERESTING hypothesis to research. “What’s your favorite color?” is not such a question, but here’s 2 good research questions: (i) Are artists more likely to be left-handed than people found in the general population? or (ii) 45% of the poor in the U.S. are illiterate. 2) Part of research should include Null and Alternative hypotheses/testing, (at various ? = 0.01, 0.025, 0.05), 3) both p-value and critical-value decision making analyses, 4) confidence levels (at least 95%, 97%), analysis with ? known (z scores) and ? not known (t-scores), 5) confidence intervals, 6) regression function, mean mode median, histograms (if appropriate) 7) Multiple samples should be taken with findings from the various samples analyzed and compared. 8) Identify recommendations on why there are differences or not. 9) Conclusions. Research Proposal Approval: You must get approval on your hypothesis research by Professor Schwendner. Data: You may collect your data via an observational study or a survey. If you choose a study, you may obtain your data through any appropriate source, including the internet (you must site your data if you use the Internet). Surveys are allowed on a limited basis and must done representatively. However, such surveys must deal with important issues such as ethical questions or positions. Frankly speaking, whether the pizza in the cafeteria is good is not such a question.

Report: Your report will be typed and include supporting tables/spreadsheets/analysis. Please try to keep your project research paper to <10 pages. Required Format: Word Doc (.doc, .docx) or PDF (.pdf) format. No google docs, links. Just email me your paper to my Pace email ([email protected]). Use as your filename LastName117paper.doc, e.g., Schwendner117paper.doc. Suggested Timeline: (dates in yellow are hard deadlines) Date Task 3/29 Project Discussion/Assigned. 3/30-4/7 You decide/determine statistics research project topic. Obtain research approval from Dr. Schwendner. 4/9 Deadline to obtain approval of research project. 3/30-4/15 Conduct the research / compile data.
