In this module, we explore police-youth interactions and their implication on delinquency. The police-youth interaction can have a lasting impression on a youth, positive or negative. Think back to the introduction video with the police officer and skateboarding youths ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GgWrV8TcUc ) This was a disturbing interaction and far below any standard of professionalism, and surely left a lasting impression on those juveniles. let us explore the police-youth interaction through a series of questions to vet the best practices when police interact with juveniles to create a more positive outcome and build trust within the future of our communities:

· What do you see as the primary roles of policing juveniles?

· What are the pros and cons of the community policing model vs historical model? What events precipitated the change from the historical model to the community policing model?

· What if you could implement one, and only one policing strategy to eliminate juvenile crime in the United States? Which strategy would you choose and why?

· How does the internet impact juvenile delinquency and enforcement?

PART 2

Read the Case Profile – Rico’s Story(PAGE 541).

Focus on how the chapter concepts could explain aspects of Rico’s Story into a delinquency act, but diverted from the juvenile justice, which is one reason he was successful. Also, conduct further research, through credible sources, to develop a deeper understanding of the factors that may have contributed to the police officer’s discretion and how this can create an opportunity to turn a delinquent event into a teaching moment with a life changing event.

You should take a thoughtful and analytical approach to the issues raised in the case study and by the additional resources in order to prepare yourself to answer the questions posed in the critical thinking portion of the case profile. Address the following prompts:

· In Rico’s case, he did not receive any serious consequences for his actions. Do you agree with what the officer did? Why do you think he was not charged?

· Do you agree that police officers should have the right to use their discretion in school settings? What are the benefits of this approach? What are the negative aspects of this approach?
