Moral Muteness: is it good or bad?

What exactly is moral muteness?

Moral Muteness occurs when people behave according to moral principles yet do not talk about morality when discussing these decisions. That is, people are using moral principles to make the decisions they make but they don’t say they’re doing this. This is a unique situation because it is much less common than other cases like Relations Between Moral Action and Speech. Of course, there is nothing particularly odd about a person who uses moral principles and talks about them. There’s even nothing too unusual about a person who talks about moral principles but doesn’t follow them. We usually refer to them as hypocrites. But, moral muteness is unusual due to the fact that this is a case where moral principles are used.

So, why not talk about them?

1. It starts with personality. Introverts don’t tend to vocalize. In addition, silence also depends on whether the person can bear the consequences of speaking and whether he has the time and ability to help certain people and certain things. Most people would be happy to be the whistler if the above conditions were met.

2. The effect is that society will become less and less caring. It creates a bad cycle where everyone keeps silent and leads to a herd mentality, so more people will choose to keep silent.
