1970s/80s Conservative Backlash

We’ll be discussing the conservative backlash to the social changes brought about by the 1960s movements we just examined. While some saw these changes as progress, others saw them as a devolution of society. After losing in Vietnam, the Watergate scandal also led many Americans to lose their trust in the government. These are the central issues we’ll focus on this week.

Read:

· Give Me Liberty! Ch 26 (Eric Foner, Kathleen DuVal, and Lisa McGirr, Give Me Liberty!: An American History, Vol. 2, Seagull 7th edition (magenta cover).

Answer JUST ONE of the four (4) posted questions about GML! Ch 26 in a 100-200 word paragraph by Wednesday.

If you cite the textbook, a video, or document in the chapter, please note the page number or video/document name in parentheses at the end of the sentence

1. What was Watergate and how did it lead to the American public’s decreasing trust in the government? Use Give Me Liberty! and this video with short video clips to answer.

2. What was the significance of the ERA and why didn’t it pass in the 1970s? Use Give Me Liberty! and this short video to answer.

3. Using this very entertaining 1989 music video and Give Me Liberty!, discuss the significance of the “yuppie” in President Ronald Reagan’s America.

4. Why did groups like Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority emerge and what did they think of the changes brought about by the 1960s/70s social movements? Use Give Me Liberty! (“the Rising Tide of Conservatism”) and this primary source on Falwell to answer.

Was reconciliation between the American colonies and Great Britain possible in 1774? Why or why not?
Examine the painting that opened Chapter 5: The Bostonian Paying the Excise -- man, or Tarring and Feathering (Figure 5.1). How does this painting represent the relationship between Great Britain and the American Colonies in the years from 1763 -- 1774?
How did the condition of certain groups, such as women, blacks, and Indians, reveal a contradiction in the Declaration of Independence?
How did the Revolutionary War provide both new opportunities and new challenges for slaves and free blacks in America?
Describe the backgrounds and philosophies of Patriots and Loyalists. Why did colonists with such diverse individual interests unite in support of their respective causes? What might different groups of Patriots and Loyalists, depending upon their circumstances, have hoped to achieve by winning the war?

Essay Prompts for the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

Answer one of the following questions in an essay of about three pages. Your paper should include specific details from the book to support your arguments and at least three quotes from the text.

A. Towards the middle of the book, Douglass tells his readers that “you have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall [now] see how a slave was made a man.” How, in Douglass’ account, did masters reduce humans to slaves? How did Douglass make himself a man? (In your answer, you should consider events throughout the book, not just in the area around the quote.)

B. Writing about Sophia Auld, the wife of his master Thomas, Frederick Douglass claimed that “slavery proved as injurious to her as it did to me.” (Chapter 7) What, according to Douglass, were the several negative effects that slavery had on slave owners? In your answer, be sure to discuss not only the shocking barbarity of slave owners, but also the ways it perverted spiritual, political, and paternal values, among others. (Your answer should consider events throughout the book, not just in Chapter 7.)

C. Frederick Douglass’ Narrative presented a powerful abolitionist message. How did Douglass write the truth of slavery in a way that undercut the positive depiction of slavery put forward by Southerners at the time of the Narrative’s publication? In your answer, make sure to give an account of the Southern depiction of slavery as well as the many ways that Douglass demolished that rosy depiction.

Essay assignment for module 8: War of Independence or American Revolution?

The 1783 Treaty of Paris that formally ended the war between Great Britain and the United States made it clear that Britain’s former colonies were now an independent, sovereign, and self-governing nation called the United States. The American War of Independence had been a success, but was the War of Independence also an American Revolution? Did the period of resistance to Parliament (1763-1776) and the war that followed (1776-1783) help create a new society, with different political and social ideas and structures, or was the new United States merely the old British colonies now under a different flag?

The question posed above is an enormous one, and certainly not one that can be answered in a short paper. However, I want you to think about how some of the historical knowledge you have gained from the textbook, essay, and primary source reading can be used as evidence to support a position on the question I posed above: War of Independence, or American Revolution?

Your assignment: In a paper of about 1.5 to 2 double spaced pages, take a position on the above question and provide evidence from two of the following four areas to support that position: Ideas about rights and governance, democratization (the extent of political participation), the rights and roles of women, and the status of African Americans. It may help you to think of this as a question of what changed and what stayed the same. If these things changed significantly in this time period, then it was an American Revolution. If these things largely stayed the same, then it was just a War of Independence.

Your essay should have a thesis clearly stating which side of the big question you are supporting, supported by specific evidence including quotations from relevant primary source documents.

As a refresher of where you can find relevant material:

Ideas about rights and governance: Yawp, James Otis, Declaration of Independence

Democratization (political participation) Yawp, Ebineezer Mackintosh essay, Declaration of Independence

Right and roles of women: Yawp, Adams correspondence, Benjamin Rush

Status of African Americans: Yawp, Declaration of Independence (esp crossed out sections), Prince Hall

Make it clear that you have read the chapters and absorbed the lecture information! Remember to use proper punctuation, cite ALL your sources, and put direct quotes in quotation marks. 1. How do you feel about the way the United States dealt with the Soviet Union after World War II ended?

2. Were the fears most Americans had of Communism at the time reasonable or overblown?

3. Do you think that the way Truman and/or Eisenhower handled the Cold War was wise? Elaborate on either president (or both).

4. Also, share something you learned from Dr. O’Sullivan’s Module 5 lecture (April 16). Use specific details from the chapters (26 and 27) and from the April 16 lecture to support your response. Cite ALL your sources.

There are a number of themes you could choose to focus on. Compose the initial post based on a thesis statement. A thesis is a focused argument based on your reading of the historical documents.

Choose ONE of the following five questions to answer.

Your responses need:

á Please indicate which question you are answering.

á This essay must be 3-4 pages minimum including 1 paragraph of introduction, 6-9 paragraphs for the body, 1 paragraph of conclusion.

á Each essay must include a thesis statement. You need to make an actual argument that needs to be supported with facts.

á Each essay needs to rely on evidence found in classroom lectures, our textbook, and the OER textbook. YOU MAY NOT use outside sources, like the internet, without prior approval. Click here for the link to the OER textbook.

á You must use 2-3 primary sources and 2-3 secondary sources. Lectures do not count.

á You must cite where you got each piece of evidence [For Example: ÒHitler annexed Austria in 1938Ó (Created Equal) or ÒAfrican Americans were often forced to take bogus literacy tests before they were outlawed in 1965 (ÒVoting Literacy Test 1965Ó in Created Equal) or ÒThe Union Stockyards are an example of Gilded Age industrialismÓ (Gilded Age Lecture)].

á Use MLA or Chicago Style with parenthetical citations

á Essays should ONLY include topics that happened between 1877 and 1990.

á Submit essays in word doc or pdf format. Google doc links, pages, odt, or text submissions will not be accepted.

Follow the question prompts carefully. If a question asks you to give five specific examples, give five examples. If the question asks you to discuss the cause and effects, please discuss both.

The number one thing that students do wrong in these essays is over-generalize. Be very clear and very explicit. Do not tell me, for example, that the lives of women changed in the 20th century because “they got more freedoms.” That will not receive a passing grade. Instead, you should talk about things like the 19th Amendment or the specific things feminism did for women.

Essay Prompts (Remember, only pick one prompt)

1.

1. Capitalism, or economic success, becomes a defining American characteristic during the period this course studies (1880-1990). Find primary and secondary source evidence to support or refute this statement.

1. Explain how the fear of communism influenced modern US History. Use at least four specific examples and detail how the fear resulted in direct action from the US government, people, or culture. Be specific in your response using evidence from your textbook, primary source readings, lectures, and videos to support your argument.

1. Discuss the transition of the US government from isolationist to globalist. Use at least four specific events and detail how the event led the US closer to global foreign policy. Be specific in your response using evidence from your textbook, primary source readings, lectures, videos to support your argument.

1. How did white Americans define who was and wasnÕt ÒAmericanÓ during the period this course studies (1880-1990)? Who fit this definition? Your response should include:

4. At least one definition (from a primary source, not a dictionary)

4. At least three examples of how the actions of white Americans reinforced that definition.

1. Pick ONE of the US Civil Rights Movements (African American, Feminism, Latinx, American Indian, LGBTQ, Disability Rights). Using primary and secondary sources, discuss four examples where the movement succeeded and/or failed. Be specific in your response using evidence from your textbook, primary source readings, lectures, and videos to support your argument.
