Question Description
Western and Non-Western Compared
Most students read this chapter and realize two things: first, that they don’t know as much about other cultures as they thought theyknew, and, second, while there are differences between cultures andtraditions, there are surprising similarities as well.
Respond
In a well-organized essay, address the following:
While reading about any of the non-Western traditions, identify at least three traditions that you mentally compared to sometheory in Western philosophy? How are they similar?
Identify which features of these two traditions you saw asnon-comparable. How are the two traditions different? If you had grownup in the non-Western culture, do you think you would prefer these twotraditions over the ones to which you have been enculturated in ourWestern society? Why or why not?
When you consider that Asian philosophy predates Westernphilosophy and religion, why do you think that it was not moreinfluential on Western thinking?
How has noting and writing about the comparisons change youropinion concerning the non-Western traditions? If your opinion has notchanged, explain why you think it has not changed.
Please ensure that your essay addresses each component of theassigned questions and that your answer is well-organized, usesexcellent, college-level prose, and makes judicious use of textualevidence. Your essay must follow APA formatting and should be 500-750words long.

What does freedom reign means to you in philosophy?
Question Description
Let Freedom Reign
These discussion boards have been designed to explorecontroversial philosophical topics. Some of the questions are designedto solicit very personal responses and opinions, and these debates havethe potential to become heated. In the act of creating ideas, heat canbe a good thing, but not at the expense of hurt feelings or frustration.Remember that the practical aspect pf philosophy asks us to examine andperhaps even change something about ourselves. Hopefully, we will bechallenged by others with a different opinion, but we need to rememberthat a challenge to our beliefs is not a threat. To the contrary, itshould be regarded as an opportunity to re-evaluate and understand whywe hold these beliefs.
Some important rules to follow:
There will be no Ad hominems (attacks against the person);not following this rule may result in failure of the assignment. You candisagree with a person’s opinions, but you may not attack other people. You may, however, disagree with the ideas of others, but do so in aconstructive manner. For example, you can say, “I don’t agree with yourpost. I think instead that . . . “ But, you cannot say, “You’re anidiot” or even “That’s just plain stupid.” Academia requires a diversityof opinions but presented politely; after all, ethics is part ofPhilosophy.
Avoid making statements meant to be absolute (such as, “Thereis no other way to think about this”). Instead of asking closed-endedquestions looking for a “yes” or “no” or the “right” answer, askopen-ended questions (such as, “Have you thought about . . . ?”)
Try to connect the current discussion to topics from otherlessons. Remember that all of the Philosophers wrote about more than asingle topic and the way they think about one area of Philosophyprobably affects other areas as well. For example, it might be extremelyuseful to mention John Stuart Mill’s ethical theories from an earlierlesson during a later discussion of his support for women’s rights andequality.
Rather than simply reacting to the readings and the responsesof your classmates, think about the arguments being made. Reallyconsider the effectiveness of these arguments. “I agree” responses arenot useful to the discussion and will not receive credit.
Give some serious consideration to the topic or scenario beforeanswering; and, then, using the questions below as a guide, write a75-100 word initial response about the issue being discussed. Next, please take the time to respond to at least two of your classmates.
Respond
Would you prefer to be happy but not free or free but not happy? Provide some sort of example with your explanation.
Which freedom that you currently possess would you fight forto get back if this freedom were to be taken from you? Why is thisfreedom so important to you?

Grantham Western Culture Patriarchy Racism Institutionalized Discussion
Question Description
Who Needs to be Institutionalized?
Respond
After reviewing the chapter on Non-Western philosophies, answer the following questions:
Do you think that patriarchy (rule by men) and racism areinstitutionalized in Western philosophy and culture? Why do you thinkso, or not?
Do you believe that members of different races thinkdifferently? How do you know? If so, to what do you attribute thisdifference–nature, nurture, education, choice, or something else?
What was the most intriguing thing you discovered while reading this chapter? Why did you find it to be interesting?
