Please respond to the following. Remember to use a respectful tone and language appropriate for a learning environment in your post and replies when discussing this potentially controversial topic:

In the event of a viral outbreak in a U.S. state, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, do you think it would be appropriate for the state government to use quarantine or isolation to control the outbreak? Under what conditions would it be appropriate? Explain your rationale.
In general, discuss whether you think federal, state, and local governments have the authority to quarantine or isolate citizens to control an outbreak.

Project

1. Listen to the episode ” Is Your Carbon Footprint BSLinks to an external site. ” by the podcast “How To Save a Planet.” You can listen for free on your computer or download it to your phone and listen while you take a walk or do the dishes. I’ve linked to one place you can find it but if you already have a podcast app, you can find it there too. The transcript is on the website I linked to – just scroll down. I am embedding it below as well.

2. Which of the following statements do you agree with more? Give a full explanation of why and support your opinion with evidence.

1. “climate change is a huge, systemic problem, and the only way to fix it is with big, systemic solutions.”

2. ” I know that we’re not gonna recycle and bike and beyond burger our way out of climate change, but I do have a slightly more optimistic view that individual consumer choices can make a difference.”

3. State the system you want to work on for your final project. This part is a preliminary dive into that system. Consider this your preliminary research into the topic. For this part of your project, you are going to do research on the state of this system as it is now. How does it work? How much does it contribute to climate change? Explain how your system works.

Your system should be local or specific to a particular place. Examples of systems: Public transportation in San Jose, meat production in California, Urban planning for climate mitigation in Gilroy (e.g. planting trees, adapting buildings), Urban agriculture in the Bay Area, Regional transportation in the Bay Area (how do we get around the entire Bay Area – trains, buses, highways), Water supplies in Santa Clara County. These are just examples. Choose something that you are really interested in. Please talk with your instructor if you have an idea but need some help refining it. You will be doing a lot of work on this for the rest of the semester, so it should be something you are really interested in and might have a personal aspect to it. If you are really interested in economics or environmental racism, you can focus on that with respect to climate change. This part of your project should really be about your areas of interest. Again, speak with the instructor if you want help defining or refining your focus.

Format

· This assignment should be 2 pages – one page for each part.

· Assignment should be broken into multiple sections and have multiple paragraphs. You will be marked down if you turn in one large paragraph.

· Remember to give full citations of all your sources. Full citations are more than hyperlinks – they have the full information of the source. Use APA or MLA – you can choose. Just be consistent.

Because it is [one part of the whole project, I already focus on the Public Transportation in Bay Area. Can you focus on that?

1. A final analysis on your system. (1 page)

2. Research some proposed solutions to the system (2-3) and explain them. (2-3 pages)

3. Propose a specific solution for your system that will either make lessen the carbon emissions for your system or build human resilience in the face of climate change within that system. (2-3 pages)

4. Either a letter or a short written speech (public comment). (1 page)

I already pick the topic about Public Transporation, so please follow this topic

Details of project components:

There are more details on the project on the page after this one. There are videos and a slide show. Refer to that as well.

1. Final analysis: You began this on other term project assignments. Expand on that initial analysis. Include:

·

· a brief history of how we got here. You already did this on the previous assignment – you can take from there and condense. An example: If you are doing public transportation infrastructure, research how California became so dependent on freeways and why it didn’t invest in public transportation infrastructure.

· why this system needs to change in light of what we’ve been talking about regarding climate change. An example: if you are doing urban design, you may want to talk about increases in heat waves and the need for us to build our cities with climate resilience in mind. Be specific here.

2. Research solutions that have already been proposed or discussed. Ideally you will have 2-3. You will describe these and then analyze how effective they may be. Here’s an example from San Francisco: you are examining urban infrastructure in coastal areas and you are looking at ways to combat sea level rise. San Francisco Recreation and Parks has a proposal for a park it’s building in India Basin that has sea level resiliency in its designLinks to an external site. . I am not analyzing this design, but maybe it doesn’t take into account increasing rain events (I don’t know – you would think about this). You should have about 2 paragraphs per solution.

3. Your proposed solutions: Propose your own solutions. Choose the scale you want to work at. For example, if you want to increase sustainable transportation and choose biking as your mode of transportation, you may want to design for making our bike infrastructure better. Maybe you look at Dutch biking infrastructure for guidance. Or maybe you focus on increasing access to E-bikes. Or maybe you focus on how we can move people and their bikes on a regional scale – for example, how could we change public transit to allow people to bring their bikes and solve that “last mile problem”. You can think about this on a small scale or on a larger scale (for example, on the scale of a city or a state). It’s up to you. You may also take one of the solutions you described above and improve or expand on it. This part of your final project should be about 2-3 pages. For this you can say what you really want to see – it doesn’t just have to be what you think is possible right now.

4. Plan on how to advocate for change: This will be either (choose one):

·

· A letter to the editor of a local paper.

· A letter to an elected official.

· A public comment that you would make in a public meeting

For this part, think about who is in charge of this system. Ideally you will look as local as possible. It may be the Mayor of San Jose or the city counsel. It could be the governor. It could be a regional transportation board or air resources board. Find out who you can ask for change and craft a letter asking for that change. Advocate for what you want to see. Be specific. If the people making decisions are a board with meetings, find out when the next meeting is. Often the public can make comments. In this case, write a public comment on what you want to see. If you want some guidance, the Climate Center lists sample letters.Links to an external site. You do not have to complete the action – but I want you to practice how you would go about advocating for your position. Make sure you tell me who you are addressing and why.

1. A manufacturing facility that makes steel materials handling devices such as hand carts and an assortment of roller carts for moving heavy materials around in manufacturing facilities has decided to start making cantilever storage racking systems. This will require the purchase and installation of a 12-foot hydraulic press brake and a 12-foot shear in the fabrication department along with the necessary tools and dies to bend and punch holes in the rack components that will largely be manufactured from formed sheet metal. Employees have experience working smaller versions of this type of equipment, but room will need to be made and larger pieces of sheet metal will need to be cut and handled. The department will also need to continue to produce existing orders while the new equipment is installed. How can a management of change program be used to reduce risks in such a scenario?

2. Your organization, a company that manufactures fitness equipment such as treadmills and elliptical machines, is about to introduce lean concepts into its operations in order to be more competitive with foreign manufacturers. The foreman from the assembly department, however, does not think that his employees have the time to be involved with the lean initiative. Provide a convincing argument about why it is important for the assembly line workers to play a part.

3. Your purchasing department does not want to buy adjustable hydraulic pallet stands for the filter assembly line at a company that makes oil filters for cars and trucks. They state that the current process works just fine and that expensive, adjustable stands are not required in the Occupational Health and Safety Administration standards. The production employees in the facility are largely female and many have worked at the facility for decades. The current process for accessing filter parts entails having assemblers bend over to pick up arm loads of the various filter components from a pallet or bin and placing them on a table beside their respective workstations. The parts are assembled and pressed into place, and the completed product placed in a separate bin. Please provide a risk-based argument as to why the adjustable pallet stands would be the better choice
