FON100LL Lesson 1 Lab: Lab Safety, Equipment, and the Scientific Method

Name:

Questions:

1. Think about a nutrition controversy or claim that you’ve recently read or heard about in the media, or a question that you have about nutrition. How would you evaluate that controversy or claim, or answer your question, using the steps of the scientific method? Explain what you’d do for each of the steps of the scientific method to evaluate this claim. (25 pts.)

Controversy, Claim, or Question:

Steps of the Scientific Method:

Observation

Hypothesis

Experiment

Conclusion

2. Assume that the “experiment” step of the evaluation you described in Question 1 involves the use of chemicals. Describe four lab safety rules you would implement, and explain why they’re applicable to your experiment. (20 pts.)

a. Keep Your work area tidy and clean.

b.

c.

d.

3. You’re making your favorite dish to serve at a family gathering. Describe the dish below and identify four “FAT TOM” food safety critical points you would take into consideration when preparing, cooking, and storing your dish to keep your family safe from food poisoning. Explain why you chose these four points. (25 pts.)

DISH:

1.

2.

3.

4.

4. Consider all that you’ve learned about lab safety in this lesson and provide two examples for how you could apply this knowledge to your everyday life as a non scientist. Be sure to relate your experiences to specific lab safety procedures. (15 pts.)

5. Although you may not realize it, you use the steps of the scientific method in daily life to solve problems. Consider the following:

Part of your morning ritual is to fix coffee to have with your breakfast. You put coffee grounds and water into your coffee maker and press “start” so that the coffee is ready for you when you’re finished getting ready for work. You come back into the kitchen, and the coffee isn’t ready! What happened?

Explain how you’d figure out the problem using the steps of the scientific method. (15 pts.)

Submission

Complete the above questions in this Word document and submit them using the submission link in the Assessing Your Learning page of Lesson 1.

You’ve been asked by the 3rd grade teacher in your school to develop a simple program that provides students with some random multiplication practice.
Your program needs to:

ask the student for the lowest and highest numbers they want included, saving the inputs in variables lowEnd and highEnd.
generate two random integers within the range of lowEnd to highEnd. Save these numbers in the variables firstNum and secondNum.
prompt the user to submit their answer to the multiplication of firstNum and secondNum.
print the solution to the problem once they submit their answer.

A sample run looks like this (everything to the right of the colon in the sample is a number inputted by the user, not printed by the program):

A couple of hints:

Just like how you can combine strings and variables in a console.log() print, you can also do so in a user input function like readInt().

For example, the code: readInt(firstNum + ” – ” + secondNum + “: “); would prompt the user to input an answer to the subtraction of the variables firstNum and secondNum.

You can use a blank console.log() to print a blank line in your output. This helps make the output easier to read.
Make sure you are writing your program within the main() function and calling it!
